5 Indoor Activities to Help Improve Balance and Mobility

Healthy activities for seniors
Healthy activities for seniors
Tai Chi for seniors is a great way to keep moving and reduce fall risk.

Growing into our older years is a journey we are all going to experience in our own ways. There are many situations that unfold beyond what we can prepare for. When we think about aging, what comes to mind? It can be overwhelming to think about! It can also be different from person to person. Some might be more concerned with appearances while others are more concerned about mental plasticity!

One thing we can all agree on is the need to keep moving and stay as healthy as possible. The following activities are all great ways of staying mobile, improving balance and keeping your brain engaged in learning. Another helpful thing as we age is to feel a sense of connection with others. This has a tremendous impact on how we navigate the challenges that arise!

At Presidential Oaks our Activities experts work to provide opportunities that foster connection, wellness and FUN! If you are looking for some ideas on how to help support a healthy lifestyle throughout the aging process, look into the following activities. Many are even available to participate in online.

  1. Chair Yoga: This form of yoga uses a sturdy chair for support and can be adapted to a range of abilities. It helps seniors improve flexibility, balance, and strength with gentle stretching and mindful movements.
  2. Tai Chi: This low-impact martial art involves slow, controlled movements and weight shifting. It has been shown to enhance balance, coordination, and stability, all while promoting relaxation.
  3. Heel-to-Toe Walking: Seniors can practice walking in a straight line, placing the heel of one foot directly in front of the toes of the other. This helps improve balance and coordination. It can be done with the support of a sturdy surface or a walking aid.
  4. Standing Leg Raises: Holding onto the back of a chair for support, seniors can raise one leg to the front, side, and back to build strength in their core and legs, improving overall balance and stability.
  5. Balance Exercises with Resistance Bands: Using resistance bands, seniors can perform exercises such as squats or leg lifts to strengthen muscles that support balance. Bands provide controlled resistance, helping to improve strength without overexertion.

These activities can be done safely indoors, and with proper guidance, they can help enhance both strength and balance over time. Join us for a tour if you are looking for the perfect retirement living community for yourself or a loved one! Contact our Director of Admissions, Lezanne Flanders at admissions@presidentialoaks.org to learn more about our wonderful organization! We would love to be a part of your journey!
